Library Refurbishments
Volunteer/Library Refurbishments
Volunteer at a Library Refurbishment
Library refurbishment days are hands-on, collaborative, and deeply satisfying.
Volunteers work together to transform school libraries into spaces that feel welcoming, organized, and ready for students to use. By the end of the day, shelves are filled, books are in place, and a library is ready to reopen.
You don’t need special training.
You don’t need prior library experience.
You just need to be willing to help build something that will be used every day.
What Volunteers Do
On a library refurbishment day, volunteers may help with:
- Moving books, labeling, and shelving new books
- Following directions from our Library On-site
coordinator - Setting up a refreshed library space from start to
finish
Every task contributes to making the library functional, welcoming, and usable for students.
Painting Murals & Creative Support
Library refurbishments also include murals and visual elements designed with students in mind.
Volunteers interested in creative work have the opportunity to:
- Under the guidance of our Artist in Residence,
assist with painting murals - Help transform library spaces into cozy havens for
students to enjoy
No professional art experience is required — just a willingness to participate and collaborate.
Who Volunteers
Access Books library refurbishment days are open to the community.
Volunteers include children (ages 8 and up), teens, parents, grandparents, educators, artists, and community members who want to spend a day doing meaningful, hands-on work together.
Families volunteer side by side.
Friends come together.
New volunteers often return — and bring friends with them.
No matter your age or background, there is a role for you — from organizing and shelving books to helping paint murals and prepare library spaces for students.
The work is active, collaborative, and tangible. By the end of the day, you can see what you helped build.
That sense of shared effort — and visible impact — is what brings many volunteers back.
Ready to Volunteer?
Library refurbishment opportunities are scheduled throughout the year at public schools in Los Angeles and Orange County.
If you have questions, want to share a specific skill, or are interested in helping in a different way, contact Lorri Kampfer at lkampfner@accessbooks.net and let us know how you’d like to help.
