Scout Troop Volunteering

Access Books welcomes Scout troops who want to work together on a project that is hands-on, meaningful, and rooted in community.

Scout volunteers support under-resourced public schools by helping expand access to books through book drives, library refurbishments, and on-site literacy projects. The work is collaborative and tangible, allowing Scouts to see the results of their effort in real time.

This is real work with real impact — and it matters to the students who will use these libraries every day.

What Scout Troops Do

  • Planning and carrying out a troop-led book drive
  • Sorting, stamping, labeling, and cataloging books
  • Organizing and shelving books in a school library
  • Assisting with murals or creative elements alongside students and the Access Books Artist-in-Residence

Whenever possible, Scouts work directly in the school community they are supporting, helping transform a library space from start to finish.

Why This Is a Strong Fit for Scouts

Access Books projects encourage leadership, planning, teamwork, and follow-through. Scouts take responsibility for their role, collaborate with peers and adults, and experience how shared effort leads to meaningful change.

These projects work well for Scouts of many ages and experience levels. They are especially popular with Junior Girl Scouts and Webelos-age Scouts, who are often ready to plan and carry out projects with increasing independence and leadership.

Badges and Recognition

Participation in Access Books projects may align with certain community service or merit badge requirements, depending on the troop and program.

While recognition is part of the experience, the focus remains on contribution, responsibility, and the impact Scouts help create.
