Author Events
For many students, meeting an author is the first time they see reading as something lived — not assigned.
Access Books brings children’s authors and illustrators into public schools to connect students directly with the people behind the books they read.
What an Author Visit Looks Like
Author visits are designed to feel personal, accessible, and rooted in curiosity.
During a visit, students will:
- Hear an author read from their own work
- Learn how stories are created
- Ask questions about writing, illustrating, and imagination
These visits are paired with every student receiving a copy of the book at the visit. The students can read the new books before or after the event, strengthening the connection between the story and the experience.
Why Author Visits Matter
Author visits do more than inspire.
They help students see that stories come from lived experiences — and that their own stories matter, too.
For some children, it’s the first time they imagine themselves as a reader, a writer, or a storyteller.
And that moment can last far beyond the visit itself.
How Schools Participate
Access Books coordinates author visits in partnership with schools, educators, and authors — prioritizing schools with limited access to enrichment opportunities.
Each visit is shaped around the school community and the students being served.
