Our Mission
Access Books exists to ensure that every child — regardless of zip code — has access to books that reflect their world, expands their imagination, and invites them into a lifelong relationship with reading.
What That Looks Like in Practice
- Refurbishing and revitalizing school libraries
- Curating collections that reflect students’ identities and interests
- Creating literacy experiences that build joy and confidence
- Making sure children can take books home — and keep them
Why Access Matters
For many children, the challenge isn’t learning how to read — it’s having something worth reading.
Access Books addresses that gap with intention and respect.
“A Gap That Shouldn’t Exist”
Across interviews with educators and school leaders, one realization surfaced repeatedly: there is no dedicated public funding for school libraries in California. Schools and districts must apply for funding.
Many assumed library access was already accounted for. Instead, schools described outdated collections, limited resources, or spaces that could no longer function as libraries at all.
Access Books exists to address a gap that should not exist — by partnering with schools, listening first, and rebuilding access in ways that respect each community and its needs.
