Books Make Good Company
Why Childhood Literacy Matters
Access to books shapes how a child sees the world. It builds confidence, sparks curiosity, and opens doors that might otherwise feel out of reach. When children have books of their own and a place to read them, the impact extends far beyond the classroom.
Children who have access to books are more likely to:
- Develop a lifelong love of reading
- Build confidence in the classroom and beyond
- Expand critical thinking and communication skills
- Imagine new possibilities for their future
Access Books exists to advance educational equity by ensuring that all children—regardless of income or zip code—have access to high-quality, engaging books.
Access Books was founded to address this gap directly—by restoring school libraries, placing books into children’s hands, and extending access beyond the classroom into students’ homes and daily lives.
Beyond the School Library: Access Extends to Home
Access Books begins by removing outdated and damaged books from school libraries and replacing them with thousands of new, high-interest titles that students want to read.
From there, we help keep reading going—through book bundle giveaways, family literacy workshops, after-school book clubs, and author visits.
Books begin to move beyond the classroom and into homes, where reading becomes part of everyday life.
Why Support Books Makes Good Company
Companies who support Books Make Good Company help make this work possible—bringing books, library spaces, and reading experiences to students who would not otherwise have access.
Access Books has refurbished more than 450 school libraries across Los Angeles County and delivered over 2.4 million books directly into the hands of more than 400,000 students over the past 25 years.
At a time when access to books is being challenged in many communities, Access Books continues to expand it—ensuring that more students can read, learn, and imagine what’s possible.
